Grieve everything that you miss about the one you lost.

I was once counseling an eleven year old girl who had unexpectedly lost her mommy. She told me that her dad does not tuck her into bed and he never makes cookies. This was a perfect explanation of secondary losses. My wife’s dad died of colon cancer, and she grieves him especially when she needs advice on how to fixsomething. Each death is the death of many things. We need to grieve the one we lost and everything they meant to us.
